Introduction¶
Players often report issues such as “skill lag,” “character teleportation,” or “disconnecting after a while.” However, the materials forwarded by customer service usually consist of just a brief message and a video recording. To address these issues at the network layer, one needs to examine the actual packets between the client and the game server, as well as between the client and the accelerator node, rather than guessing. The traditional approach involves operations staff manually installing Wireshark, writing filters, and counting thousands of packets to identify retransmissions, often leading to the unhelpful conclusion of “bad network.” This Skill solidifies the entire workflow: after obtaining the capture file, it follows fixed steps to calculate metrics such as retransmissions, out-of-order packets, and zero windows. It identifies whether the issue lies in the home network, the ISP, the accelerator, or the server, and outputs a Chinese diagnostic report.
The following is an introduction to the “Game Network Troubleshooting” Skill on SkillHub (Coordinate @user_e8bbe154/game-network-troubleshooting, Version 1.0.0, Category: it-ops-security).
What is this¶
An end-to-end troubleshooting Skill for game network links, published by community author user_e8bbe154 and categorized under it-ops-security. It addresses the following problem: when players encounter stuttering, teleportation, disconnections, high latency, or packet loss, the Skill organizes information such as .pcap/.pcapng capture files, game addresses, acceleration nodes, and the time of lag into a structured analysis, producing verifiable troubleshooting conclusions.
Core Features¶
-
Link Identification: Distinguishes between the client, game server, and accelerator nodes (such as UU). It determines whether traffic is a direct connection or goes through a tunnel, and verifies if the diversion path meets expectations.
-
TCP Metrics Statistics: Counts and calculates the proportions of TCP Retransmission, Fast Retransmission, Lost Segment, Dup ACK, Out-of-Order, and Zero Window metrics. This helps determine whether packet loss is concentrated on a specific hop or distributed across the entire link.
-
UDP Tunnel Analysis: For specific versions of UDP tunnels, it parses sequence numbers and acknowledgement bitmaps to identify characteristics of out-of-order packets or loss within the accelerator’s tunnel itself.
-
Path Probing and Correlation: Combines latency and packet loss curves from tcping/psping and correlates them with the capture statistics for path analysis.
-
Dual-point Capture: Performs packet captures on both the client and server sides, comparing timestamps hop-by-hop to pinpoint which segment the fault occurred in.
-
Chinese Diagnostic Report: Compiles the analysis process, evidence, conclusions, and troubleshooting suggestions into a PDF. The report is validated page-by-page before output to prevent missing images, broken pages, or inconsistent metrics.
Installation and Activation¶
This Skill is released on the SkillHub community (Coordinate @user_e8bbe154/game-network-troubleshooting, Version 1.0.0). The documentation does not provide a standardized one-click installation command or configuration fields. Please refer to the current instructions on the SkillHub page (see URL at the end) for the actual activation method. Before enabling, ensure the environment has the following tools:
Wireshark / tshark # Capture file parsing and statistics; tshark is used for command-line batch processing
tcping / psping # TCP ping to probe target port latency and packet loss
Note: Packet capture and analysis require read permissions for the pcap file. If the file belongs to another user, adjust permissions with chmod or run with sudo. Analyzing captures containing player IPs is a sensitive operation and must be performed after obtaining authorization.
Typical Usage¶
The typical troubleshooting workflow is as follows. The commands are standard usage examples for tshark; parameters should be replaced according to the actual game address.
- First, confirm that the capture file is readable and list the distribution of IP conversations within it.
tshark -r capture.pcapng -q -z conv,tcp
This step provides an overview of the connections between the client, server, and accelerator nodes, identifying direct connections and tunnels.
- Calculate retransmission and out-of-order metrics for the target game server address.
tshark -r capture.pcapng -q -z io,stat,0,SERVER_IP
Combine filters to calculate Retransmission, Fast Retransmission, Dup ACK, Out-of-Order, and Zero Window metrics respectively, to determine which peer the packet loss is concentrated on.
- Perform round-trip probing on the game server and accelerator node using
tcping, and compare with the capture results.
tcping -i 0.2 -n 50 SERVER_IP 25443
tcping -i 0.2 -n 50 NODE_IP # Acceleration node
Comparing the latency jitter and packet loss rates of the two curves helps distinguish between a link issue and a server-side issue.
- Input the above analysis process, key metrics screenshots, path correlation results, and troubleshooting suggestions into the Skill to export a page-by-page verified Chinese PDF diagnostic report. This serves as evidence material for replying to players or forwarding to operations teams.
Applicable Scenarios and Notes¶
Applicable Scenarios: Users provide .pcap/.pcapng files accompanied by game addresses, acceleration nodes, and the time of lag, requesting analysis of the network link, troubleshooting suggestions, or the export of a diagnostic report.
Notes for Use:
-
Sufficient Capture Scope: Capturing only a few seconds of data might miss the exact moment of lag. The time of the lag should be aligned with the capture time window.
-
Tunnel Version Matching: The analysis of UDP tunnel sequence numbers and acknowledgement bitmaps depends on specific versions. If the version does not match, conclusions are for reference only and should not be directly applied.
-
Dual-point Capture is Convincing: Capturing on only one end only indicates “I see packet loss here.” Pinpointing issues to the server side requires timestamp alignment between both ends.
-
Verifiable Report Conclusions: Validate the PDF page-by-page before exporting. Metrics, screenshots, and conclusions must correspond; otherwise, the report itself may become a new point of contention.
-
Privacy and Authorization: Packet captures contain real player IPs. Confirm the scope of authorization before exporting and distributing.
Conclusion¶
The value of this Skill lies in transforming game network troubleshooting from “installing tools, counting packets, and relying on experience” into a fixed process: link identification, TCP/UDP metrics statistics, path correlation, dual-point capture, and Chinese report export. Every step is supported by verifiable evidence. It is suitable for game operations teams, accelerator technical support, and teams that need to explain network issues to players.
