Introduction

The plugin ecosystem of DeepSeek Harness (DSH) enables flexible extension of local large-model capabilities. For Chinese web-novel writing, dsh-novel-writer is a local workbench plugin. The core problem it solves is how, when running locally, to maintain stylistic consistency, manage foreshadowing and settings systematically, and complete the full workflow from “pre-writing material gathering” to “whole-book structural check” without relying on online APIs.

The plugin is maintained by siweina and is open-sourced under the MIT license. It does not depend on any cloud API; all text analysis, style comparison, and semantic retrieval are performed locally.

Core Features

The plugin provides 19 tools, covering the complete loop of web-novel creation.

  1. Writing workbench trio:
    • novel_chapter_brief: Call before writing to gather 16 input materials in one request (previous chapter ending, hooks, outline direction, character cards, pending foreshadowing, worldbuilding terminology, style baseline μ±σ, source-text anchor passages, etc.). Missing items are recorded in the degraded field.
    • novel_fix_plan: Revision console that converts style diagnostics into a prioritized to-do list (with line numbers, current and target values, anchor passages, and rewrite direction), and supports plan, verify, and mark states for rechecking.
    • novel_plot: Structural view for cross-chapter checks, inspecting foreshadowing spans, character absence intervals, plotline gaps, and more.
  2. Style quantification: Provides six-dimensional μ±σ baseline analysis (syntax complexity, modifier density, abstraction level, action density, uncertainty, negative space index) and a 12-axis atmosphere spectrum.
  3. Local semantic engine: Built-in 24MB Chinese model (bge-small-zh), supporting local vector retrieval for natural-language queries of semantically related passages.
  4. MCP support: Can serve as an MCP server for Claude Desktop or Cursor.
  5. Settings management: Includes foreshadowing registration, five settings tables (characters / locations / items / timeline / worldbuilding), continuity auditing, and more.

Installation and Activation

Installation requires the environment dependencies to be met. Run the following command in the terminal:

dsh plugin add dsh-novel-writer

Environment requirements:
* Node.js version: >= 22.3
* DeepSeek Harness version: >= 0.1.1-rc.2

After installation, restart DSH. A “Writing Assistant” entry appears in the DSH left-side navigation area.

Typical Usage

The following is the standard workflow for completing one web-novel chapter:

  1. Prepare the directory
    mkdir -p novels/我的小说

  1. Gather pre-writing materials
    Enter the following in the conversation:
    > Gather materials for the next chapter
    The system calls novel_chapter_brief and returns a complete material package, including the previous chapter continuation, relevant characters, pending foreshadowing, style baseline μ, source-text anchor passages, and more.

  2. Write the main text
    Follow the returned anchor passages and skeleton to create the content.

  3. Self-check
    Enter the following in the conversation:
    > Self-check this chapter
    The system calls novel_style_check and outputs similarity, a deviation list, and a six-dimension comparison table (in-band ✓ / out-of-band ⚠).

  4. Create a revision checklist
    Enter the following in the conversation:
    > Turn this chapter into a revision checklist
    The system calls novel_fix_plan and outputs to-do items sorted by severity → difficulty → line number. Each item includes the original line number, current and target values, anchor passages, and rewrite direction.

  5. Whole-book structural check
    Enter the following in the conversation:
    > Check the whole-book structure
    The system calls novel_plot { action: "graph" } and analyzes cross-chapter structural issues such as foreshadowing spans and continuous character absence intervals.

Notes

  • Data privacy: All inference is local; the manuscript is not uploaded, and no API token consumption is involved.
  • Language design: The plugin is designed only for Chinese novels. The core model and corpus are optimized for Chinese.
  • UI note: The interface style uses official DSH design tokens.
