Introduction

The built-in web_search tool in DeepSeek Harness (DSH) typically runs through an Anthropic-compatible endpoint (web-search-deepseek), which consumes LLM turns. The dsh-tinyfish-search plugin aims to solve this problem. It takes over web_search via the TinyFish Search API, converting requests into ordinary GET requests without consuming model invocations.

Plugin Positioning

dsh-tinyfish-search is a TinyFish-backed web search provider. It is maintained by maxwell-feng and is designed to address the issue of the web_search tool depending on LLM turns, providing a more direct, zero-consumption search capability.

Core Capabilities

  • Provider ID: Registered as tinyfish.
  • Request Method: Each search call is converted to GET https://api.search.tinyfish.ai?query=..., with the X-API-Key included in the Header.
  • Result Normalization: The returned results[] (title / snippet / url / date) is normalized into seam’s portable source shape WebSearchSource[].
  • No Consumption: Each search does not consume LLM turns.

Installation and Enablement

Installing this plugin automatically takes over the built-in web_search tool. Use the following command to install it:

dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-tinyfish-search

After installation, the plugin automatically enables the host-level tool-web entry, making the web_search tool visible to agent presets in all configuration profiles.

Notes

  • Scope: Re-enabling the tool-web entry makes the tool visible to all agent presets (including presets that do not include the web tool by default, such as minimal). If a preset individually mounts a tool-web entry, that entry’s configuration overrides the global registration.
  • Compatibility Check: DeepSeek Harness 0.2.0-rc.2 validates peerDependencies before loading the plugin. If the version does not match, DSH will refuse to load and provide diagnostic information.
  • Exception Handling: If the runtime environment is not within the declared dependency range, DSH will reject the entry and print the specific version pair. To explicitly accept the risk, run:
    dsh plugin allow-version dsh-tinyfish-search@0.14.0 --dsh-version <your-dsh-version> --accept-risk
  • Pricing: TinyFish Search is free at any wallet balance.

Conclusion

By connecting directly to the TinyFish Search API, this plugin enables web search with zero LLM cost. Developers can enable this capability by configuring an API Key without modifying code. For more details, refer to the GitHub repository.
