When building agents that require economic, health, education, or environmental data, directly integrating with the OECD SDMX API often involves handling cumbersome metadata structures. xby-oecd-search, as a DSH plugin, wraps the SDMX API and integrates OECD statistical data retrieval capabilities into the chat interface.

What Is It

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server plugin that provides comprehensive OECD statistical data through the SDMX API.

Core Features

  • set_xby_apikey: Sets the API key in chat; the action is automatically persisted and remains valid after restart.
  • search_dataflows: Searches OECD datasets (dataflows) by keyword and returns the ID, name, and description of matching datasets.
  • list_dataflows: Lists all available datasets, with optional category filtering for browsing data by topic.
  • get_data_structure: Retrieves the metadata and structure of a specific dataset, including dimensions, attributes, and valid values for queries.
  • query_data: Queries actual statistical data. ⚠️ By default, it returns the latest 100 observations (up to 1,000 supported); specify a limit to handle large datasets.
  • get_categories: Retrieves all available OECD data categories (17 categories in total, covering economics, health, education, environment, and more).
  • get_popular_datasets: Retrieves a curated list of frequently used datasets.
  • search_indicators: Searches for specific economic or social indicators by keyword (e.g., “inflation”, “unemployment”, “GDP”).
  • get_dataflow_url: Generates a direct link to the OECD Data Browser for visualizing the data in a browser.
  • list_categories_detailed: Retrieves detailed information for all 17 categories, including example datasets for each category.

Installation and Enablement

Install the plugin with the following command:

dsh plugin --profile web add github:xby_skill/xby-oecd-search

Typical Usage

  1. Obtain an API Key: Before using the plugin, obtain an API key from the Xiaobenyang official website.
  2. Set the API Key: Enter set_xby_apikey <your_key> in chat.
  3. Query Data: query_data returns 100 records by default. For large datasets (for example, SOCX_AGG), a single request may exceed 70,000 records, so you must explicitly specify a limit parameter to avoid context overflow.
  4. Generate a Link: Use get_dataflow_url to directly generate a browser link to the dataset.

Use Cases and Notes

This plugin is suitable for scenarios that require access to OECD statistical data. Note that the query_data interface has a default data-volume limit, and manual parameter specification is required when working with large-scale datasets.

The plugin runs with the permissions of the current DSH process. Before using it, review the source code and license (MIT).
