Introduction

DeepSeek Harness (DSH) provides an agent development environment. In addition to functional toolchains, UI personalization is also a common requirement. dsh-whale-particles is a browser-side Web plugin that adds an interactive dot-matrix background to the DSH Web UI. The plugin uses a particle system to simulate the outline of a “whale” or a custom photo, and provides manual interaction and automatic screensaver mode.

Plugin Overview

  • Name: dsh-whale-particles
  • Author: fewoot
  • Category: Fun reskin
  • License: MIT

Installation

Installing this plugin requires the DSH Desktop client. After installing/updating, you must restart DSH Desktop for changes to take effect.

Method 1: npm installation (recommended)
Use the official CLI to install it. The plugin is recorded in profile dependencies and can later be checked for updates in the plugin marketplace.

dsh plugin --profile desktop add dsh-whale-particles

Method 2: local directory

dsh plugin --profile desktop add ./dsh-whale-particles

Method 3: offline package
After extracting dsh-whale-particles-offline-*.zip, double-click the install-whale.bat script. The script automatically handles backup and registration.

Method 4: manual installation
1. Copy the dsh-whale-particles folder to %USERPROFILE%\.dsh\profiles\<profile>\node_modules\dsh-whale-particles.
2. In …\profiles\<profile>\package.json, add "dsh-whale-particles" to dsh.profile.bundles (back up before editing).
3. Restart DSH Desktop.

Note: Manually copied instances will not appear in the “Installed” list in the plugin marketplace, so they cannot be updated with one click through the marketplace.

Core Features

The plugin’s core logic consists of two parts: the dot-matrix engine and UI adaptation.

1. Particle physics and modes
* Independent external forces: Each particle has an independent, low-frequency, and smooth “external force”, simulating realistic fluid motion or the gentle movement of the whale on the official website, rather than a uniform flow field.
* Manual mode: When the cursor is near, particles within the circle stir gently; after the cursor moves away, the particles smoothly return to their original positions.
* Automatic mode (screensaver): Supports 360° wave sweeps in any direction (automatically avoiding directions too close to the previous one, with diagonal slowdown) and a full-screen breathing effect (slowly rises, holds, then slowly falls).

2. Subject and appearance
* Subject switching: Uses the whale silhouette by default (path from dsh-homepage-skin). Supports importing transparent PNG photos; the engine extracts the subject by the alpha channel, compresses the mask, and stores it in browser localStorage. It is not uploaded to the cloud.
* Parameter panel: Go to Settings → Plugins → the “Whale Dot-Matrix Background” tab. Parameters are grouped by “Mouse perturbation / Auto mode / Appearance / Subject source / Outline / Mode”. All settings take effect immediately and are automatically saved; resetting to defaults is supported.
* UI adaptation: The main UI does not occupy space (no floating bar in the bottom-right corner). The plugin automatically moves the entire input bar of empty sessions (hero) downward to avoid blocking the background subject.

Usage

1. Import a custom photo
In the Settings page, under “Subject source”, select a photo and upload a transparent PNG. The plugin automatically parses it and generates a dot-matrix mask.

2. Switch interaction mode
In the parameter panel, switch between Manual/Auto mode in the “Mode” group.

3. Adjust parameters
Adjust parameters such as external force strength and breathing speed according to preference, or click “Restore defaults” to reset.

Technical Details and Notes

1. UI adaptation dependency
UI transparency and input-bar shifting depend on DSH Web’s CSS Module hashed class names (such as _frame, _composerSeat). Older plugin versions hard-coded these class names, so these two features may stop working after each DSH Desktop upgrade. Starting with version 0.3.1, it uses runtime self-discovery, but it is still recommended to check after upgrading.

2. Troubleshooting
If UI adaptation does not take effect, execute the following commands in the browser DevTools console:
* __dshWhale.selectors(): view the value, source (auto-discovered/fallback), and current dot count for each class name.
* __dshWhale.rescan(): manually rescan stylesheets and rebuild styles.
* __dshWhale.apply(): rebuild styles based on the current parsed results.

3. Data storage
Photo mask data is stored in the browser’s localStorage (key names such as dsh-whale:photo), and parameter settings are stored in dsh-whale:cfg. Each machine stores them independently.

4. License and updates
The default whale outline path is inlined from the dsh-homepage-skin repository under the MIT license. For commercial use or changing the shape, modify the path data in the source code yourself. Photo mode is unaffected.
