Introduction

The core philosophy of DeepSeek Harness (DSH) is “everything is a plugin.” In the domains of long-text processing and complex scenario construction, traditional conversation modes easily lose contextual details and struggle to maintain the continuity of a worldview. dsh-nexttavern (NextTavern) is a workflow-focused plugin that brings a native Agent Loop to long-form roleplay. Through fixed setting injection, a hard-cut window mechanism, traceable director’s notes, and hybrid retrieval capabilities, it addresses memory gaps and context management challenges in long-form writing.

Plugin Positioning

This is a native Agent-driven long-form roleplay tool. It is maintained by user a86582751, and the current version is 0.2.5 (version 0.3 is in development). It aims to let the AI actively consult world books, organize memories, and derive character behavior, while the user controls the direction and co-creates the story. The plugin supports one-click installation on Windows and Linux and is released under the GPL-3.0 license.

Core Features

The plugin provides a complete long-form creation toolchain, including the following capabilities:

  • One-click installation and environment preparation: Self-contained installers are provided for Windows (.exe) and Linux (.sh), which automatically prepare the runtime, workspace, and shortcuts, and support in-place upgrades.
  • Character card import and conversion: Supports importing PNG/JSON formats from SillyTavern and TauriTavern, including embedded world books; supports converting long-form novel text into character cards.
  • Long-text memory system:
    • Fixed settings: Not compressed and always injected into the context.
    • Hard-cut window: Advances along main-text boundaries and retains continuous main text at the tail.
    • Director’s notes: Independently organized in the background, with source hashes and worldline anchors for traceability.
    • Hybrid retrieval: Supports three historical recall modes: keyword, semantic, and hybrid.
  • Presets and writing style system: A standalone preset page includes 16 built-in writing styles, provides 200 custom slots, and supports global, per-conversation, or one-time overrides.
  • Multi-model and multi-character collaboration: Supports multi-model coordination (DashScope, OpenAI-compatible, and local models) and independent reasoning for multi-character Agent clusters.
  • Creation and export: Includes conversation branch management, custom creation rules, decision cards and status bar, HTML/CSS reading enhancements, one-click export of novel drafts, and resource library management.

Installation and Enablement

The official installation links currently point to v0.2.5; version 0.3 has not yet been released as a stable release.

Windows Installation

  1. Download the installer: NextTavern-Setup.exe or NextTavern-Setup-arm64.exe.
  2. Double-click to run the installer and choose an installation directory.
  3. Wait for the installation to complete; the program will automatically open the browser.

Linux Installation

  1. Download the installation script: NextTavern-Setup.sh.
  2. Grant execute permission and run it: chmod +x NextTavern-Setup.sh && ./NextTavern-Setup.sh.
  3. The script automatically downloads a portable Node.js runtime and configures the workspace. Root privileges are not required, and it does not rely on the system package manager.

Typical Usage

  • Import a character card: Upload a PNG/JSON character card from SillyTavern or TauriTavern, and the system will automatically parse the metadata and read the embedded world book.
  • Convert long text to a card: Import the text of a long-form novel, and the system can convert it into a character card containing characters, plot, and settings.
  • Historical retrieval: During long-form conversations, query historical memories using keyword, semantic, or hybrid retrieval, with filtering by worldline supported.
  • Interactive creation: Start from a simple idea and let the AI help build the worldview, character relationships, opening lines, and writing style.

Applicable Scenarios and Notes

  • Applicable scenarios: Long-form novel creation, immersive role-playing (RPG), and plot inference that requires maintaining a complex worldview and multiple character relationships.
  • Version and data:
    • Version 0.3 is in development, and the current main branch is not a directly installable release.
    • Upgrade warning: Migration of legacy session data is not guaranteed. Before upgrading, export character cards or novels in the old environment.
    • Novel export limitation: The novel export feature does not include the full state (such as the current worldline anchor, etc.).
  • System compatibility:
    • Windows: The installer is not yet code-signed. The first run may trigger a SmartScreen warning; please select “Run still”.
    • Linux: Running as the root user is not supported. The installer is self-contained and does not use the system package manager.

Summary

dsh-nexttavern provides DeepSeek Harness with the infrastructure for handling long-form, complex narratives. Through the native Agent Loop and hybrid retrieval mechanisms, it effectively manages the context window and keeps long-form roleplay coherent. For developers or creators who need to deeply construct worldviews, the plugin offers end-to-end tooling from card management to novel export.
