About this skill
Problem
Some business domains, workflows, modules, or departments survive because of organizational boundaries, historical habits, or coordination inertia—not because the work itself requires them. Optimizing such domains can keep fuzzy boundaries, scattered functions, and low-value processes in place.
How it works
domain-elimination-assessor reframes the question from “can this be optimized?” to “should this exist independently?” It follows a D0-01 → D0-05 chain:
- Boundary identification: map what the domain includes and excludes, and mark overlap with other domains.
- Rationale analysis: classify whether it is required by the work, required by human limitations, legacy, or externally constrained.
- Elimination feasibility: assess absorption, function redistribution, or deprecation, including cost and risk.
- Necessity judgment: score boundary clarity, functional cohesion, and elimination cost.
- Decision output: recommend eliminate, restructure, or retain clearly.
Limitations
It is best for fuzzy, fragmented, or legacy domains, and does not replace legal, standards, or contract constraints. Scores and elimination plans require real data and user calibration; the AI output is a starting point, not a final decision.
Use Cases
- Before splitting a business line, assess whether Operations Support overlaps with product and growth, and recommend retention or absorption.
- During a department merger review, quantify functional fragmentation across admin, procurement, and IT to decide if the unit should remain independent.
- During an architecture review, evaluate whether a service module is legacy and whether it can be absorbed into a larger platform module.
- In process governance, score boundary clarity, cohesion, and elimination cost for a standalone quality supervision process before deciding.
Best For
- HR business partners redesigning org structure and needing to decide whether a department should remain independent.
- Business owners consolidating workflows and needing to check if Operations Support is only legacy.
- Tech architects reviewing service modules and evaluating whether platform absorption is better than standalone ownership.
- Process owners needing a clear eliminate, restructure, or retain recommendation for fuzzy cross-team processes.
