About this skill

Problem

Claude Code / Codex and similar CLI sessions lack desktop-level feedback: completion, errors, and waiting states require watching the terminal. Companion Pet turns that background state into a visible sprite in a screen corner, reminding users in a soft “master” tone and allowing natural-language control of the pet.

How It Works

It is a local background GUI daemon: one process serves multiple sessions, and it stays fully local without network access. The skill maps user intent to the companion wrapper script, which locates the real installation automatically. Key capabilities include:

  • Lifecycle and status: start the pet, stop it, inspect status, role count, and GUI backend.
  • Role management: add role images, list user and built-in roles, switch roles, and handle white-background or format issues when needed.
  • Reminder copy: maintain event-specific titles and bubble lines for session_start, done, error, waiting, goodbye, and idle.
  • Session integration: trigger reminders at key session points through Claude Code plugin hooks rather than polling logs.

Boundaries

It fits local developer desktop environments and depends on a GUI backend; when dependencies are missing, it can fall back to tkinter cards or system notifications. Changes directly affect visible desktop behavior, so uncertain paths should be confirmed first. It is not a remote collaboration tool and does not perform code generation, log analysis, or automated task execution.

Use Cases

  • During Claude Code sessions, move completion, error, and waiting reminders to a screen corner instead of watching the terminal.
  • Add a role image to the pet, check white-background transparency, and restart to see it.
  • Edit event-based notification titles and bubble lines, then restart to apply the copy.
  • Start or stop the pet and inspect its running status, role count, and GUI backend.

Best For

  • Engineers using Claude Code for long sessions: who want desktop reminders for terminal state.
  • Developers maintaining Codex sessions: who need lightweight event-triggered prompts.
  • Technical users customizing desktop pets: who want to add role images and tune copy.
  • Local GUI tool maintainers: who need to inspect status, roles, and GUI backend issues.
