About this skill
Problem: business model analysis often stops at canvas filling
Many teams can list Customer Segments, Channels, and Revenue Streams with a Business Model Canvas, but miss whether value creation, delivery, and capture fit together. Without checks on industry position and user cognition, BP or due-diligence notes may describe what a company does, not why it can earn profit or defend a position.
How it works: SKILL framework decomposition
This skill structures analysis into four layers: S covers the 9 canvas blocks; K examines value creation, value transfer, value capture, and resource synergy; I assesses upstream, midstream, downstream, and ecosystem roles; L uses 4C and a perception–understanding–alignment–action–referral path to evaluate cultural and cognitive fit. It supports reports with canvas details, dimension analysis, positioning assessment, and cultural interpretation.
Boundaries
It is useful for business model research, BP drafting, competitor benchmarking, and new business validation. It does not replace financial modeling, legal due diligence, or primary market research. When inputs are incomplete, the output is better treated as a structured assumption list and validation agenda, not a final conclusion.
Use Cases
- Founding teams validate the nine canvas blocks and produce a business-model report before writing a BP.
- Investors assess a target's industry position, revenue streams, and cost structure during pre-investment due diligence.
- Strategy teams evaluate a new business line by checking whether the value proposition drives users from awareness to action.
- Product leads benchmark competitors by organizing customer segments, channels, partnerships, and pricing power into a comparison.
Best For
- Founders preparing a fundraising BP who need to check whether value creation, delivery, and capture are consistent.
- Business leaders responsible for strategy who need to judge the industry position and pricing power of a pivot.
- Investment analysts who need to quickly form business-model structure, risk notes, and competitor comparisons before investing.
- Product or strategy consultants who need to deliver reports with canvas details, analysis dimensions, and cognitive paths.
