About this skill

Problem

OpenClaw state is spread across ~/.openclaw/workspace, ~/.openclaw/agents, and runtime configuration. After moving machines, reinstalling the OS, or deleting directories, it is hard to recover identity, memory, scheduled tasks, and custom agents intact. This skill packages migratable state into a private Git repository and uses commits as rollback points.

How It Works

The main flow is checkpoint-backup, checkpoint-schedule, and checkpoint-restore. Backups collect files such as SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, MEMORY.md, TOOLS.md, and AGENTS.md, export openclaw cron list --json into memory/cron-jobs-backup.json, and copy agent directories into the repository. A .gitignore excludes secrets, credentials, and temporary files. For cross-machine use, $HOME paths are replaced with {{HOME}} on backup and expanded to the current user directory on restore, preventing broken absolute paths.

Boundaries

It supports macOS and Linux, not Windows. Automatic backups rely on macOS launchd or Linux cron, require a private repository, and recommend SSH authentication. It does not store API keys, OAuth tokens, or downloaded media; those should use a password manager or re-authentication. Rolling back to an older checkpoint may cause the next backup to overwrite newer remote commits.

Use Cases

  • Rebuild an OpenClaw workspace on a new macOS machine by restoring memory, identity files, and backed-up agents from a private Git repository.
  • Create a rollback point after editing SOUL.md or memory/*.md by running checkpoint-backup before continuing configuration changes.
  • Set up hourly automatic backups using launchd or cron to push workspace and agents to a private Git repository.
  • Diagnose missing scheduled tasks after migration by checking whether memory/cron-jobs-backup.json was backed up and restoring cron configuration.

Best For

  • Engineers maintaining a local OpenClaw assistant who need stable recovery of identity, memory, and agents after machine changes or OS reinstalls.
  • Personal developers using OpenClaw cron automation who want a rollback checkpoint before editing SOUL.md or TOOLS.md.
  • AI workflow authors managing multiple agent directories who need to sync ~/.openclaw/agents to a private repo and restore across machines.
  • Technical writers responsible for AI-assistant disaster recovery who need documented restore steps without committing secrets.
