About this skill

Problem It Solves

Many bug fixes stop at a single code change: a missing field is patched without checking other models, an API validation fix does not update tests, or a permission issue is closed without recording the lesson. This makes regressions likely and makes the fix hard to reuse for similar problems.

problem-solver targets development debugging workflows. It emphasizes root-cause analysis, related-issue scanning, test synchronization, and learning capture instead of patching only the reported error.

Core Workflow

  • Intake: record the symptom, impact scope, and severity.
  • 5Why analysis: trace the visible failure back to the underlying cause.
  • Related-issue scan: check models, API validation, front-end column rendering, permission middleware, and similar patterns.
  • Requirements and test sync: compare expected behavior against PRD / Spec documents, then add or update automated test cases.
  • Minimal-impact fix: change only the affected layer and analyze test scope across models, controllers, services, front-end components, middleware, and database migrations.
  • Targeted testing and iteration: run only affected API or UI tests, then loop back to root-cause analysis if new failures appear.
  • Learning archive: write the retrospective to .learnings/LEARNINGS.md.

Boundaries

It fits existing codebases with concrete issues such as API defects, front-end display bugs, permission problems, or missing model fields. It is not a debugger by itself and does not replace a real test environment; missing requirements, automated scripts, or UI testing setup must be supplied manually.

Use Cases

  • When a backend API misses fields, trace the model and validation and scan similar endpoints.
  • When a list page renders incorrectly, check column logic, related components, and E2E scope.
  • When permission middleware misses a check, scan routes and add tests for affected APIs.
  • After fixing a service, analyze callers and run only the related automated tests.

Best For

  • Backend engineers fixing API defects and checking similar validation rules
  • Front-end engineers fixing list rendering issues and aligning E2E tests
  • Security engineers investigating permission bypass and scanning middleware or routes
  • Maintainers reviewing bugs and archiving lessons in .learnings
