About this skill

Problem Addressed

When a video link is handed to a downloader, the failure mode is often not “it will not download,” but that it downloads the wrong artifact: resolution, container, frame rate, HDR encoding, audio language, filename, and save directory may all be unsuitable for later use. Running yt-dlp directly can also scatter multilingual subtitles, thumbnails, and temporary files.

How It Works and Boundaries

The skill turns downloading into a confirmation-first workflow: it checks yt-dlp and ffmpeg, lists available formats, and offers options such as best quality, MP4 compatibility, smaller file, or audio only. It downloads only after the user confirms quality, parent directory, and filename.

  • yt-dlp parses and downloads; ffmpeg merges, transcodes, extracts audio, and converts thumbnails.
  • For normal video downloads, it saves the best thumbnail as 原始封面.png and stores independent audio plus one source-language subtitle in hidden .work/input/ for later translation.
  • It accepts only user-provided http:// or https:// media URLs and treats page titles, comments, subtitles, and other remote text as untrusted data.
  • It defaults to --no-playlist; playlists require explicit request, and downloaded content should be limited to material the user is permitted to save or use.

Use Cases

  • Before downloading a YouTube or Bilibili lecture video, confirm MP4 compatibility, save directory, and filename to avoid an unplayable MKV.
  • For localization work, download an English video while keeping one source-language subtitle and independent audio in a hidden directory for later translation.
  • When extracting only podcast audio, choose the best audio or M4A-compatible format without downloading every subtitle language or scattering unrelated thumbnails.
  • When a playlist is explicitly requested, review available formats and confirm the output directory before running the yt-dlp command.

Best For

  • Video editors who routinely source clips from YouTube, TikTok, or Bilibili and need to confirm quality, MP4 compatibility, and filename before download.
  • Localization engineers who want one source-language subtitle and independent audio prepared for later translation or ASR workflows.
  • Automation developers who want yt-dlp and ffmpeg format selection, output paths, subtitle choice, and thumbnail handling as reviewable steps.
  • Researchers who need reproducible metadata such as format ID, codecs, and subtitle source while keeping remote page text out of reasoning.
