About this skill
Problem This Skill Addresses
When a team or individual faces a consequential decision, the usual shortcut is to give a confident answer from experience. That can miss objectives, timing, resources, incentives, and organizational constraints. Decision Thinking turns the judgment into a reviewable process: map the situation, select a decision archetype, then convert the plan into action and feedback. It does not simply answer the question; it anchors the reasoning in Sun Tzu and the unity of knowledge and action, helping the user separate facts, assumptions, risks, and execution conditions.
How It Works and Where to Apply It
The skill progresses through Sense the Situation, Select a Model, Apply It, Design the Plan, and Validate the Plan:
- Sense the Situation: compare both sides using Way, Heaven, Earth, General, Method and the Seven Calculations to identify key advantages, disadvantages, and likely decisive factors.
- Select a Model: choose archetypes such as Strategy Without Decisive Battle or Knowing-Acting Unity, then explain the core logic and modern mapping.
- Apply It: use the ten-element map to place the decision into the current context, covering task definition, critical constraint, target, conditions, strengths, principles, method, steps, timing, and goal.
- Design the Plan: produce strategic positioning, environment analysis, resource allocation, action path, risk plan, and know-action checks.
- Validate the Plan: stress-test the plan from conservative, competitive, opportunistic, and idealistic angles, then revise or roll back if needed.
It fits business operations, strategy, organizational collaboration, and personal career choices that require iterative deliberation. It is less suitable for pure fact lookup, fixed SOP execution, or demands for a single immediate answer. The user should provide material assumptions, data, owners, and deadlines so the model does not become the final conclusion.
Use Cases
- A business owner uses the Five Matters and Seven Calculations to compare resources, channels, and team capability before choosing a growth market.
- An operations team checks worst-case limits, competitor response, timing windows, and long-term value before launching a new incentive plan.
- A product manager maps goal, constraints, competitors, and steps into the ten-element map before writing the market-entry proposal.
- A manager defines action steps, review cadence, and fallback plans for key assumptions during an org restructure.
Best For
- An operations owner accountable for quarterly targets who must choose market priorities under resource limits.
- A product manager preparing market entry who needs to turn competitive analysis into an actionable proposal.
- A manager leading a restructure who needs to convert strategy changes into action steps and fallback plans.
- A founder or career decision-maker who needs to test assumptions, bottom-line risks, and the first executable step.
