About this skill

Problem

The default WorkBuddy desktop UI is not flexible enough for project-specific themes, role-based backgrounds, or demo setups. Directly editing installed files can break updates, official package integrity, or local state. workbuddy-palette targets this gap: it injects a restorable CSS palette into the running renderer without replacing WorkBuddy.app, app.asar, or Windows install files, and adds a 🎨 menu for switching colors, uploading clean background images, or restoring the native look.

How It Works and Boundaries

  • It starts WorkBuddy with --remote-debugging-port=9223, locates renderer/index.html through local CDP, and injects the CSS palette plus the menu into the live interface.
  • The usual workflow is to detect macOS or Windows, follow the matching reference path, and resolve a real palette id before applying it to avoid configuration errors.
  • The first apply usually restarts WorkBuddy; later runs may persist the debug port in shortcuts so subsequent injection can happen without another restart.
  • CDP is bound to loopback 127.0.0.1, but trusted local software should still be preferred while the palette is active. Manual WorkBuddy restarts remove the injection by design and require reapplying. It fits local UI customization, not official-file replacement, server-side distribution, or environments that forbid a debug port.

Use Cases

  • Before demos, apply a project palette to WorkBuddy desktop and switch back to native from the top-right menu.
  • Upload clean character artwork as the WorkBuddy background without touching install files, then reapply after restarts.
  • Maintain several palette.json presets and switch between desktop looks from the injected palette menu.
  • Debug no-response skins by checking doctor, the CDP endpoint, and paint/status injection state.

Best For

  • Ops owners maintaining WorkBuddy desktop demo environments who need brand palettes without modifying official packages.
  • QA engineers doing product checks who need to restore the native look and verify injection leaves install files untouched.
  • Local-workspace engineers who need custom backgrounds and multiple palette.json presets.
  • Designers using WorkBuddy for prototype reviews who need temporary project palettes and reapplication after restarts.
