About this skill

Problem

When a Downloads folder, desktop, or temporary project folder accumulates many files, manually inspecting each one is tedious. File names may be messy, but extensions usually identify whether a file belongs to documents, images, code, archives, audio/video, or installers. This skill targets that specific cleanup task: it does not rename files, does not recurse into subdirectories, and only moves root-level files into typed subfolders.

How It Works

It organizes files by extension in bulk, rather than parsing file contents or restructuring business directories:
- Confirm the path: it first pins down the target folder to avoid touching the wrong location.
- Scan and classify: it maps root-level files into categories such as Documents, Images, Code, Archives, Videos, Audio, and Installers.
- Confirm before moving: it shows per-category counts and waits for user confirmation before creating subdirectories and moving files.
- Safe fallbacks: same-name conflicts are skipped and reported; missing paths, permission issues, and locked files produce explicit feedback.

Boundaries

This is suited to cleaning the root level of a single folder, not whole-disk archiving. Because it does not recurse, rename, or delete folders, the existing directory structure remains intact. Custom categories, cross-directory cleanup, or follow-up operations on moved files require additional explicit rules.

Use Cases

  • Tidy a Downloads folder by moving PDFs, images, videos, and installers into extension-based subfolders.
  • Clean a desktop working directory by grouping code files, archives, and documents while leaving subfolders intact.
  • Prepare a project delivery folder by separating .py, .ts, and .zip files into type folders before packaging.
  • Organize a user-provided directory's root-level media and documents, skipping same-name conflicts and reporting them.

Best For

  • Engineers maintaining Downloads folders who need to separate PDFs, images, code, and archives by type.
  • Developers preparing deliverables who want .py, .ts, and .zip files in the project root grouped quickly.
  • Ops or support staff clearing desktop workspaces who need media, documents, and installers moved into subfolders.
  • Technical contributors packaging projects who need root-level files classified by extension without changing subfolders.
