About this skill

Problem It Addresses

When TypeScript projects call external APIs, hand-written client wrappers can drift from the backend contract: field names are typo-prone, parameter types are missing, request bodies are maintained by comments, and callers may not update after API changes. An OpenAPI Schema often already describes paths, parameters, responses, and models, but if it is used only as documentation rather than the source for client generation, integration and regression costs remain.

How The Skill Works

Orval Wrap is aimed at TypeScript client wrapper scenarios, with the core approach of generating type-safe API wrappers from an OpenAPI Schema. It extracts paths, request parameters, request bodies, response shapes, and data models from the API definition, then turns them into TypeScript client wrappers that fit project code better than manually written fetch, axios, or ad hoc wrappers. Because generation is driven by the schema, it is better suited to build steps, code generation, or automation flows, where API changes can be reflected in client code more consistently.

Boundaries And Notes

The usefulness of this skill depends on the completeness and consistency of the OpenAPI Schema. If the schema misses dynamic fields, uses inconsistent naming, or does not match actual backend responses, the generated types and wrappers will also be incomplete. It is mainly for client wrapper generation, not a backend proxy, runtime API discovery, business state management, or permission layer design. Generated output should still be reviewed for naming, request options, error handling, and project style before being merged.

Use Cases

  • Use an OpenAPI Schema to sync API fields and response types into frontend code
  • Refactor hand-written Axios calls to reduce hardcoded request fields and missing types
  • Wire OpenAPI docs into CI to generate a unified client wrapper for service use
  • Check request parameters and response shapes during integration to avoid stale clients

Best For

  • Frontend engineers who want to turn OpenAPI Schemas into type-safe wrappers
  • Full-stack developers who prefer generated API calls over hand-written code
  • Platform engineers responsible for API integration and type maintenance
  • DevOps engineers who generate unified client code in CI
