About this skill
Problem it addresses
When a child is crying, throwing a tantrum, refusing to brush teeth, dragging out homework, getting into peer conflict, or pushing back during adolescence, parents often need an immediately usable next step rather than a long theoretical explanation. This skill treats parenting support as a routing problem: first identify the child's developmental stage, then classify the issue as emotion, behavior, learning, social, or parent-growth related, and finally calibrate the response by timing and green-yellow-red risk level.
How it works
- Route before answering: it separates the
0-3,3-6,6-12, and12-15stages, then maps requests to emotion management, behavior guidance, learning support, social issues, adolescent communication, or parent growth. - Parent state first: if a parent is about to lose control, it starts with self-regulation; if a conflict has already happened and the parent feels guilty, it begins with self-compassion before moving into review and repair.
- Risk-aware output: green risks receive normal coaching, yellow risks receive pattern tracking and a suggestion to consider professional support, and red risks stop ordinary guidance and focus on immediate safety and urgent help.
- Structured responses: common outputs include what happened, what to do now, what to say, what to avoid, a small joint action, and one or two long-term suggestions.
Boundaries and notes
It is not a diagnostic, therapeutic, or treatment tool and does not replace professional evaluation. For adolescents, it uses more equal and mature language; for children aged 0-8, it can draw on age-appropriate metaphors, body-sensation prompts, and fixed family rituals. It is best suited for parents who need concrete scripts, boundary-setting, learning habits, and parent-child communication strategies.
Use Cases
- A child suddenly cries before sleep, and the parent needs immediate calming scripts and one next action.
- A child procrastinates homework and talks back, needing age-mapped boundary and motivation advice for 6-12.
- A parent feels guilty after a conflict and needs self-compassion before conflict repair.
- A 13-year-old refuses communication and is on a phone, needing equal dialogue and limit-setting.
Best For
- New parents: managing frequent first tantrums and needing quick risk checks plus usable scripts.
- Parents of school-age children: handling homework delay, peer friction, and rule execution without comparisons.
- Parents of adolescents: turning pushback and phone use into equal conversations while setting limits.
- Family-education supporters: creating age-mapped coaching scripts and parent-child actions to reduce reactive responses.
