Smart File Organizer

Problem

Download folders, shared drives, and project workspaces often accumulate a flat mix of file types. Manual sorting is slow and error-prone: .docx, .png, .py, .zip, and .csv files can sit in the same directory, making lookup and backup harder. file-organizer does not delete or convert files; it turns a scattered file set into a purpose-based folder structure.

How It Works

When asked to organize a folder, the skill scans the target path for file extensions and maps them to predefined categories: documents, images, code, archives, videos, audio, data, and executables. The typical workflow is:

• Preview: show the files that would be moved before acting
• Create folders: add category folders if they do not exist
• Move files: place each file into the matching category folder
• Log actions: write _organize_log.md with operation details

It supports --dry-run for preview-only mode, --recursive for subfolders, and --exclude for regex-based exclusion patterns. Files already in the correct category folder are skipped to avoid redundant moves.

Boundaries

This is useful for downloads, media libraries, document backups, and code assets, but it only performs moves. It does not delete, rename, extract archives, or touch hidden system files. For symlink-heavy trees, permission-restricted paths, or files that need business-rule classification, run --dry-run first and review the mapping.
