About this skill

Problem

When repeating redis-cli tasks against local or test instances, manually assembling host, port, db, and authentication arguments is error-prone and hard to audit. This skill keeps Redis connection settings in environment variables and preserves connection history plus command logs.

How It Works and Limits

It reads REDIS_HOST, REDIS_PORT, REDIS_DB, and REDIS_PASSWORD from the environment, defaulting to 127.0.0.1:6379 and database 0. Redis operations use credentials via environment variables; REDIS_PASSWORD may appear in redis-cli command-line arguments because of the redis-cli interface. Runtime state is stored under ~/.local/share/redis-helper/ for connection history and command logs. It fits scripted or semi-automated access to a local Redis instance, key inspection, and maintenance commands. It is not a production HA access layer, and shared logs should be treated as potentially sensitive.

Use Cases

  • During local Redis integration work, connect to a test database via environment variables and inspect keys.
  • Before running redis-cli maintenance commands, centralize host, port, db, and authentication settings.
  • When debugging local cache state, keep connection history and command logs for review.
  • In scripted tasks, read REDIS_PASSWORD from the environment and access a selected Redis database.

Best For

  • Local backend developers who need to run repeated redis-cli commands against a test database.
  • Operations engineers who want to inspect local Redis key state and retain command logs.
  • Automation authors who prefer environment variables to manage Redis connection settings.
  • Cache-debugging engineers who need to review recent connection and operation history.
