About this skill

Problem

Microsoft Visio is sensitive to SVG import details. Generic SVG generators often produce architecture diagrams where text overflows boxes, line breaks render as visible <br> tags, or connectors drift from the intended layout. When the deliverable is an editable engineering diagram, raster or image-only output is not enough.

How It Works

The skill uses a .drawio master file and SVG for Visio import workflow: a Python script emits uncompressed inline XML, then drawio_to_svg.py converts it into Visio-compatible SVG. It handles mxCell vertex / edge elements, fixed-coordinate edges, text clipping, height-based font sizing, CJK/Latin-aware wrapping, dashed lines, and arrow markers. It is suited to layered architecture diagrams such as controllers, bus/IO layers, and field devices.

Boundaries

It works best for structured, coordinate-controlled diagrams, not freeform canvas drawing. Avoid <br> for line breaks, missing parent="1", base64-compressed .drawio input, and overcrowded text in small boxes. If Visio still rejects the SVG, open the source .drawio in draw.io and export the target format from there.

Use Cases

  • Draw a three-layer industrial control architecture and export a Visio-importable SVG.
  • Adjust node coordinates, dashed lines, and arrows in an existing Draw.io diagram, then produce a Visio-ready structure view.
  • Convert Python-generated inline XML diagrams into SVGs with text clipping and height-based font sizing for review.
  • Apply light-blue/green/orange layer colors to a bus diagram and verify CJK labels do not overflow boxes.

Best For

  • Automation engineers who must import industrial control structure diagrams into Visio for review.
  • Platform engineers who generate Draw.io nodes and connectors with Python scripts.
  • Technical writers who deliver customer-facing Visio architecture documentation.
  • Electrical engineers who draw PLC, bus, IO, and field device diagrams.
