About this skill
Problem Solved
Hand-written eNSP topology files often have inconsistent device XML, interface pairing, coordinates, or connection types, which can prevent eNSP from opening the file cleanly or cause mismatched interfaces and links. ensp turns descriptions such as core-to-access layer device counts and interconnections into a native .topo file, so the topology structure can be materialized as a simulation object before validation in eNSP.
How It Works
The skill first parses the requested network devices, connections, text labels, and area boxes. It then generates UUID v4 values for each device, calculates grid-based layout coordinates, and assembles XML according to the structure in references/topo-reference.md. Finally, it writes the .topo file to the current directory and prints the path so the user can open it in eNSP. Supported device categories include routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, APs, endpoints, servers, and Cloud; connection types include Copper, Serial, and Auto. It can also add txttips text annotations such as Loopback0, network segments, Area, or AS, and use type=1 shapes to group core layers, access layers, or different zones by color.
Scope And Limits
The output is an eNSP-openable topology file, not complete device configuration, routing policy, or traffic results. Layout is automatic and grid-based, so complex designs may need manual position adjustments. Device models, interface formats, and XML fields depend on eNSP support and the referenced documentation.
Use Cases
- Before a lab design review, generate a .topo file that maps core, aggregation, and access devices.
- When testing OSPF, create a topology with area boxes and Loopback text labels, then open it in eNSP.
- For wireless demos, place AC, AP, STA, and wired devices into one eNSP topology layout.
- When documenting a campus network, export switch, firewall, server, and PC connections as a .topo file.
Best For
- Network engineers who need to convert written design notes into an openable eNSP topology.
- Instructors preparing OSPF or wireless lab environments with labeled areas and devices.
- IT training staff who need quick .topo diagrams with area boxes and connection links.
- Students building certification practice topologies and verifying device connections first.
