About this skill
Problem
When class notes, reading excerpts, or speech transcripts remain as loose text, review often lacks cues that trigger recall. This skill addresses the gap between “notes are written” and “notes can be studied” by turning existing study material into a Cornell Notes structure. It keeps the main column for condensed points, uses the cue column for keywords or self-test questions, and compresses the bottom summary into a short recap. It is not intended to generate a full course notebook from scratch or focus on typographic polishing.
Workflow
The skill generally works in three stages:
- Intake and understanding: identify the subject, topic hierarchy, and scope; confirm whether the output should be one page or multiple pages and whether self-test questions are needed.
- Structuring: extract core concepts into the notes main column in logical order; create cue-column entries as keywords or questions for each knowledge block; mark key points, difficult points, and easily confused items.
- Summary and output: generate a 2-3 sentence bottom summary, preserve the three-zone layout, and add review guidance; for multi-page notes, include cross-page links. The output emphasizes concise main-column notes, cue entries aligned to knowledge blocks, and summaries that do not list source text.
Fit and Limits
It works best with existing class notes, textbook excerpts, or study points. If the input is too thin, mixes unrelated topics, or is mainly code, complex mathematical proof, or brainstorming, conversion may be weak. Cue-column keywords and summaries are more useful when the learner first drafts them and then refines them with AI, because that preserves active processing.
