About this skill

The problem

When product and sales teams compare competitors, the issue is rarely “finding features.” It is usually scattered information, inconsistent dimensions, and conclusions that slide into subjective claims: Is a feature absent, basic, or mature? Which gaps are worth closing? How can sales highlight value without attacking competitors? competitive-feature-matrix focuses on public-source competitive analysis and turns fragmented signals into a reviewable, updatable feature comparison matrix.

How the skill works

  • Set the frame first: define direct or indirect competitors, comparison dimensions such as features, pricing, experience, and ecosystem, and the goal such as product planning, sales support, or funding materials.
  • Fill the matrix: label each product’s feature state by dimension. Prefer ✅ mature, ⚠️ basic, ❌ absent, or a 1–5 star rating over a simple yes/no.
  • Produce strategy: extract key gaps, differentiation points, and actionable recommendations, and generate sales talking points that avoid competitor bashing.

The emphasis is not on listing every feature, but on turning “feature coverage” into “resource judgment”: which missing capabilities affect core user value, which are noise, and which should be monitored rather than chased immediately.

Limits to keep in mind

This skill relies on public channels and cannot cover unreleased internal capabilities. Matrices are time-sensitive and should be refreshed after major competitor releases. It is not a substitute for user research, financial pricing models, brand strategy, or patent legal analysis. Outputs should cite sources and update dates, and “has the feature” should not be read as “delivers a better experience.”

Use Cases

  • Prepare a product review by mapping 2-3 direct competitors’ core features into one dimension matrix and flagging gaps for roadmap planning.
  • Create a one-page competitor quick-reference for customer visits before demos with prospects, highlighting differences and adding non-aggressive sales talking points.
  • Validate competitor feature maturity from public docs and G2 reviews during a quarterly market review, marking mature, basic, absent items.
  • Draft funding materials using 5-8 key feature dimensions to explain differentiation without causing information overload from long excessive feature lists.

Best For

  • Product managers planning roadmaps who need to review direct-competitor feature gaps and decide which gaps deserve backlog work.
  • Pre-sales engineers or sales reps who need to convert feature differences into customer talking points without attacking competitors.
  • Marketing strategy operators who need public-source competitor matrices for quarterly reviews and funding materials.
  • Competitive analysts who need to track public releases and version updates to refresh feature maturity labels.
