The Problem
When a company manages multiple SBUs or evaluates acquisition targets, looking only at revenue, profit, and market share can miss industry attractiveness, competitive strength, and dynamic risk. The DP Matrix places business prospects and company competitiveness in one 3×3 framework, helping decide whether a unit should grow, hold, harvest, or divest.
How the Skill Works
The skill follows a practical analysis workflow:
- Scenario selection: distinguishes regular portfolio analysis from M&A target evaluation, using 7 factors or 3 factors respectively.
- Factor scoring: rates business prospects on a 1-5 star scale and M&A targets on a 0-10 point scale, with adjustable weights.
- Matrix placement: maps composite scores into High, Medium, and Low bands, then places them in the corresponding nine-quadrant area.
- Strategy mapping: connects each quadrant to actions such as leader, double-or-quit, cash generator, phased withdrawal, or divestment.
It also compares the DP Matrix with the BCG Matrix, highlighting differences in information granularity, reliance on internal data, and quadrant precision, and uses the China Post case to show how units are ranked from strong prospect–strong competition to weak prospect–weak competition.
Limitations
The DP Matrix fits multi-factor strategic portfolio decisions better than single-metric financial screening. It depends on selected factors, weights, and data quality; different evaluators may reach different conclusions. In M&A contexts, security and synergy judgments are harder to validate, so the output should inform rather than replace final investment decisions.
