About this skill

Problem

Corporate performance appraisal often mixes financial metrics, people performance, and budget execution. Common failure modes include inconsistent EVA adjustment policies, unclear responsibility-center boundaries, unstable segment cost allocation, and internal transfer pricing without tax-compliance checks. These issues make appraisal results hard to explain and weak as a basis for resource allocation or incentive design.

How It Works

The skill focuses on quantitative evaluation of operating performance from a finance perspective. It supports five workflows:

  • Appraisal system design: map strategy to financial key outcomes, classify cost, revenue, profit, and investment centers, and define metrics, weights, and targets.
  • EVA appraisal plans: calculate EVA, handle accounting adjustments, determine WACC, and design incentive mechanisms such as bonus banks and EVA incremental sharing.
  • Segment reporting: identify reportable segments using the 10% test, aggregate revenue, cost, profit, and assets, and eliminate internal transactions.
  • Internal transfer pricing: select among market-based, cost-plus, negotiated, dual pricing, and formula-based methods, then define monitoring metrics and dispute-handling rules.
  • Performance analysis and improvement: decompose variances into volume, price, and mix effects, trace root causes, and produce action items.

It also enforces checkpoints: for example, CP2 validates EVA formulas, adjustment basis, and WACC traceability, while CP4 requires tax-compliant transfer pricing.

Boundaries

It is aimed at CFOs, finance directors, group executives, and business-unit leaders for financial appraisal, segment profitability, and internal pricing tasks. It does not replace HR performance management, budget preparation, full financial statement analysis, or independent tax planning; cross-border or related-party pricing should be reviewed with tax-compliance roles.

Use Cases

  • Design a responsibility-center metric and target plan for business unit annual appraisal.
  • Build an EVA appraisal plan, document accounting adjustments, and estimate WACC-linked incentives.
  • Identify reportable segments using the 10% test, allocate indirect costs, and eliminate internal transactions.
  • Select an internal transfer pricing method, calculate standard prices, and set deviation monitoring.

Best For

  • CFOs / finance directors: need to translate group strategy into quantified financial appraisal metrics.
  • Business unit leaders: need to design EVA, profit, or investment center appraisal plans.
  • Group financial analysts: need to prepare segment reports and handle cost allocation and internal eliminations.
  • Finance BPs: need to define internal transfer pricing methods, monitoring metrics, and dispute-handling processes.
