About this skill
Problem
When writing equity research notes, the hard part is not collecting numbers; it is keeping facts, assumptions, and opinions apart. A low P/E may look attractive, but it is meaningless without checking cash flow, leverage, competitive position, and accounting quality. This framework turns company analysis into an evidence chain for listed companies, covering financial statements, valuation, growth, profitability, FCF, balance-sheet strength, shareholder returns, and risks.
How it works
It follows a structured workflow:
- Define scope: confirm company, market, time horizon, and output depth so short-term catalysts are not mixed with long-term compounding.
- Company snapshot: summarize business model, revenue drivers, segments, customer concentration, and competitive position.
- Financial review: examine revenue growth quality, margins, free cash flow conversion, debt, liquidity, dilution, and working capital.
- Business quality: assess moat, pricing power, recurring revenue, cyclicality, operating leverage, and management capital allocation.
- Valuation and risk: compare P/E, EV/EBITDA, EV/Sales, Price/FCF, and DCF where useful, then check competitive, regulatory, refinancing, dilution, and accounting red flags.
- Conclusion: produce bull, base, and bear cases, key metrics to monitor, and a final view of attractive, watchlist, avoid, or insufficient data.
Boundaries
It is a research framework, not personalized investment advice or a prediction of returns. Its quality depends on the inputs: missing or stale filings, market data, and peer data must be stated clearly. It is useful for structured research notes, company comparison, and investment theses; it is not a substitute for compliance review, legal diligence, or real-time trading decisions.
Use Cases
- Analysts review a quarterly filing and compile revenue, gross margin, FCF, leverage, and peer valuation into a structured research note.
- Portfolio managers prepare weekly meeting materials by outlining bull/base/bear cases and key monitoring metrics for a public company.
- Investment analysts compare two high-growth companies using EV/Sales, Price/FCF, and DCF to judge whether the valuation is cheap or expensive.
- Researchers validate an investment thesis by checking customer concentration, refinancing, dilution, and accounting-quality red flags.
Best For
- Equity analysts: evaluate filings, valuation, moat, and risks to produce reviewable buy/watch/avoid conclusions.
- Portfolio managers: prepare weekly or investment-committee materials with a structured thesis, valuation, and key assumptions.
- Researchers: validate an existing investment thesis by separating facts, assumptions, and opinions.
- Compliance or research teams: produce documented analyses that flag missing data, stale inputs, and the non-advice boundary.
