In DeepSeek Harness (DSH) conversations, file or directory paths output by the AI are usually plain text. To open these paths, users typically need to select, copy, and paste them into the system file manager. The dsh-file-opener plugin converts such text into interactive elements, allowing a click to preview in the right-side sidebar or open with the system default application.

Plugin Introduction

The plugin was developed by user sailoumili, version 1.4.0, under the MIT license. It supports DSH 0.1.7-alpha.1 and later, and has zero third-party runtime dependencies.

Installation

Web Edition:
Run the following command in the terminal:

dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-file-opener

Desktop Edition:
1. Open DSH Desktop and click “Plugins” in the left sidebar.
2. Click “Add Plugin”.
3. Enter the package name dsh-file-opener, then click “Install”.
4. After installation, click “Enable Now” and confirm its toggle is on.

Core Features

The plugin automatically recognizes path text in conversations and converts it into clickable buttons.

  • Clicking a file path: If the file supports preview (for example, Markdown, images, code files, etc.), it is displayed in the right-side sidebar; otherwise, it is opened with the system default application.
  • Clicking a directory path: On Windows, it is opened in File Explorer; on other platforms, it is handled through the sidebar.
  • Shift + Click a file path: Force opening with the system default application, ignoring preview logic.
  • Clicking the folder icon after a path: Clicking the folder icon after a file path opens its containing directory; if the path is a directory, it opens the directory itself.
  • Clicking a non-existent path: It does not report an error; instead, it opens the nearest existing parent directory.
  • Path recognition scope: Supports absolute paths, ~/... (expanded to the current user’s home directory), and ./ or ../ (resolved against the session working directory).
  • Inline code recognition: Even without an official button, inline code whose content is a path is clickable and includes a folder icon.
  • Error handling: If opening fails, a visible notification is shown; it does not fail silently.

Usage Recommendations

To make file paths in AI replies clickable, it is recommended to explicitly require the AI in the agent instruction file (such as AGENTS.md) to wrap complete absolute paths in backticks. For example:

Every file or directory mentioned in the reply must be wrapped in backticks as a complete absolute path, such as C:\work\报告.md.

Notes

Because the plugin runs with the permissions of the current DSH process, pay attention to the following limitations when using it:

  • Platform differences: Directory opening is only supported on Windows; on other platforms, it falls back to the sidebar.
  • Security filtering: UNC network paths (such as \\server\share) and Windows reserved device names (CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1-COM9, LPT1-LPT9) are not opened.
  • Relative path limitations: When a relative path cannot be resolved to an absolute path, it can only be opened through the sidebar; forcing the system application with Shift has no effect.
  • Access outside the workspace: When paths outside the workspace are provided to the sidebar for preview, the host access policy may return 403, or the file may be too large and return 413. In this case, hold Shift and click to open with the system application.
  • Permission issues: Paths with insufficient permissions are treated as non-existent, resulting in opening their parent directory.
  • Special characters: If a file name ends with a single quote or backtick, that character is treated as punctuation and removed.

Conclusion

This plugin reduces the operational cost of file management in DSH conversations by making paths interactive. To view the source code or provide feedback on issues, visit the GitHub repository.
