In the queue management of DeepSeek Harness (DSH), the default “Steer” operation is usually applied only after the model has generated a complete response. When streaming output is in progress, this waiting can introduce latency. dsh-steering solves this problem by allowing responsive steering before the model output has finished.

This is a plugin maintained by ManoloRemiddi and part of the DeepSeek Harness plugin collection. It uses host-provided lifecycle hooks and does not include a bundled DSH runtime or third-party dependencies. Its core value is providing real-time intervention in model output without interrupting in-progress tool execution or queue order.

Core Features

  1. Responsive steering: Applies steering during model generation rather than waiting for a complete response.
  2. Queue state preservation: Retains subsequent prompts in the queue without losing pending work.
  3. Tool safety mechanism: Running tools finish before steering is applied; they are not interrupted or executed repeatedly.
  4. Request handling logic: Cancels stale requests while preserving pending work, and internally creates an aborted turn boundary instead of starting a new conversation.
  5. Lifecycle integration: Relies on host-provided lifecycle hooks to implement the above behavior.

Installation and Enablement

Installing this plugin requires downloading the corresponding .tgz package.

  1. Download dsh-steering-0.1.0.tgz.
  2. Run the installation command using an absolute path:
dsh plugin --profile web add /absolute/path/to/dsh-steering-0.1.0.tgz
  1. Finish all active conversation sessions, then restart DSH.
  2. After installation, the plugin is mounted in the web profile.

Typical Usage

After installation, no additional API key or model calls are required. Simply use the existing “Steer” operation in the DSH queue. If this behavior needs to be enabled for a specific agent preset, add a configuration entry pointing to the installed package instead of enabling it globally.

Applicability and Notes

  • Version compatibility: The verified environment is DSH 0.1.5-rc.1 and Node 24.19.0. Other DSH versions have not been tested.
  • Cancellation latency: Backend or provider cancellation latency may vary, which can affect when steering takes effect.
  • Irreversible operations: Actions that have already been executed will not be undone.
  • Feature scope: The plugin provides behavioral logic and does not include a queue UI. It takes effect only for the agent in the selected DSH profile. To disable it, disable the dsh-steering profile entry and restart DSH when idle.

Conclusion

dsh-steering improves the responsiveness of the DSH queue by optimizing the timing of intervention during the model output phase. Its design avoids disrupting in-progress tool execution and queue order. The complete source code and directory listing can be viewed on GitHub and SkillHub.
