Preface

The core design philosophy of DeepSeek Harness (DSH) is “everything is a plugin.” In workflows involving agent development and code collaboration, developers often switch frequently between the DSH chat window and GitHub repositories. dsh-github-workbench aims to solve this problem by integrating GitHub’s core workbench into DSH’s sidebar, offering an interaction experience close to a browser while preserving the continuity of the DSH workflow.

Overview

This plugin is maintained by meyaomiao and currently has 3 stars on GitHub. It mainly addresses the problem that developers cannot directly operate GitHub repositories within DSH. It provides repository directory trees, Issues/PR/Actions tabs, and supports creating Issues, opening PRs, commenting, merging, and rerunning CI.

Core Capabilities

Mounting Modes

The plugin supports dual mounting modes, automatically negotiated at runtime:
* Tab: If dsh-better-sidebar is installed, the plugin preferentially registers as a sidebar tab (DSH 0.3.x).
* Standalone panel: If dsh-better-sidebar is not installed, it automatically falls back to a custom-rendered expandable/collapsible panel on the right side of the chat area.

Code Browsing

  • Directory tree: Supports recursive repository structure retrieval via git/trees?recursive=1.
  • File preview: Text files support preview with line numbers, limited to <900KB; binary or oversized files fall back to external GitHub links.
  • Responsive behavior: When container width is <600px, the directory tree automatically collapses into a “Directory” drawer.

Issues / PR Management

  • List: Supports search, sorting (default: most recently created; can switch to most recently updated), and pagination. PRs are categorized into open, closed (unmerged), and merged.
  • Write operations: Supports creating Issues/PRs, commenting, editing title/body, editing/deleting comments, and closing/reopening.
  • Merge: Supports three merge methods: merge / squash / rebase, with a strong confirmation dialog before execution.
  • CI control: The Actions runs list displays real-time status icons. Hovering reveals options to trigger a rerun or cancel (cancellation requires confirmation); clicking navigates directly to the original run page.
  • Repository switcher: Upon opening, lists repositories visible to the token (including owner/collaborator/organization repositories, excluding archived repositories, sorted by push activity). Supports real-time filtering by typing.
  • Public search: Typing at least 3 characters triggers a debounced public repository search, with sorting by ⭐ supported.
  • Local management: Repositories owned by others can be removed (hidden locally) and restored on the management page.

Inbox

  • Provides a three-pane view for Issues / PR / Actions.
  • Issues/PR monitors new Issues/PRs in public repositories visible to the token; Actions monitors only the current repository and up to 5 recent public repositories.
  • Clicking a row jumps to the corresponding tab; “Return to Original Repository Page” returns to the state before entering the inbox. Unread status is displayed as header counts, sidebar tab badges, and a separate vertical bar.
  • Link takeover: After enabling “Take over GitHub links in chat” in settings, clicking a github.com link in the conversation opens it in the workbench, automatically switches to the repository, and lands on the corresponding detail page.
  • Direct browser access: The toolbar provides a one-click entry to open the current repository in the system browser.

Native Look and Feel

  • Uses a 16px Octicon-style SVG icon set.
  • Colors consume the host --dsw-* design tokens and automatically follow light/dark themes and skins.
  • Font size defaults to following the DSH sidebar (12px), adjustable to 13/14 in settings.

Installation and Enabling

Installation

Install using the official CLI:

dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-github-workbench

You can also install via npm:

npm i -g dsh-github-workbench
# 或
pnpm add -g dsh-github-workbench

Or load it directly from GitHub:

dsh plugin --profile web add github:meyaomiao/dsh-github-workbench

Local mounting method (requires git clone followed by pnpm install/build):

git clone https://github.com/meyaomiao/dsh-github-workbench.git
cd dsh-github-workbench && pnpm install && pnpm build
dsh plugin --profile web add .

Enabling

After installation, the plugin must be enabled in the configuration file.

  1. Edit the ~/.dsh/profiles/web/cordis.patch.yml file.
  2. Add the following content:
# cordis.patch.yml 示例
- insert:
    - id: github-workbench
      name: 'dsh-github-workbench'
  1. Restart the DSH Web process and perform a hard refresh in the browser.

Notes and Compatibility

Token and Privacy

  • The token is stored only in browser localStorage or host pluginSettings; it is not uploaded to the server and is not included in conversation context.
  • Permission requirements: Fine-grained tokens require Contents R · Issues RW · Pull requests RW · Actions RW. Classic tokens require repo; modifying workflows requires adding workflow additionally.
  • Anonymous access: Without a token, public repositories can be browsed; anonymous requests are limited to 60/h and are read-only. The footer displays the remaining core quota in real time.

Compatibility

  • 0.3.x (current mainline): Preferentially registers as DSH’s official native right sidebar. Compatible with DSH 0.1.5-rc.1 / 0.1.5-rc.2 and later versions in the 0.1.5 line.
  • 0.2.x: Maintenance mode only, for bug fixes. Compatible with DSH ≤ 0.1.2-rc.1.
  • Known issue: In a DSH 0.1.2 + better-sidebar environment, the 0.3.x tab degrades into a standalone panel. If the previous tab mode is required, use 0.2.x.

Dependency Requirements

  • better-sidebar: The chat link takeover feature requires better-sidebar v0.13+.
  • Merge/delete comment/cancel CI: All of the above operations have confirmation dialogs.

Summary

By mounting in the sidebar, dsh-github-workbench provides DSH users with GitHub access close to a native IDE or browser experience. It not only solves the pain point of frequent window switching, but also improves the efficiency of code review and CI workflows through comprehensive list management and direct operation capabilities.
