Introduction

In development environments such as DeepSeek Harness (DSH) or Claude Code, long-running tasks often lack visual feedback. The Whale Girl Desk Pet provides a companionship solution: she not only appears on your desktop but also responds to your developer actions, such as sending a message, the model working, and a turn ending.

What Is This

This is an open-source desk pet project maintained by wei125775-lab, with code released under the MIT license. The plugin supports two main platform versions: dsh (DshDesktop) and Claude Code (PetPet framework).
The core feature is that all character motion assets are generated by AI video, while idle animations are procedurally generated by baking layered PSD files, rather than using simple frame animations.

Core Features

  1. Platform Support
    - dsh version: compatible with DshDesktop and uses the frames2d format.
    - Claude Code version: compatible with the PetPet framework.
    - WorkBuddy version: provides a hook plugin, compatible with Tencent’s WorkBuddy workspace.

  2. Idle Presentation
    - Generated by baking layered PSD files, including breathing, hair drifting, and blinking effects. The motion is subtle to avoid the common frame-jitter seen in AI-generated videos.

  3. Interactive Actions
    - Eating and putting away the bowl: When you send a message or the model is working, she holds a bowl and eats; when the turn ends, she puts the bowl away.
    - Interruption reaction: If you press Esc to interrupt the current action, she immediately stops and flashes a “dismissive expression.”
    - Click feedback: Clicking the character triggers a wave or a heart-hand gesture.
    - Subagent proxy: While a Subagent is running, small dolphins swim out near her feet and swim in circles.

  4. Asset Source
    - All character assets are AI-generated.

Installation and Enabling

Choose the installation method that matches your environment.

dsh version

In the project root directory, run the installation script. The script automatically handles dependencies, including detecting and installing the @linxin666/dsh-pet renderer if needed.

node install.mjs

Claude Code version

Enter the claude directory and run the installation script.

cd claude
node install.mjs

Portable version (Windows)

Directly download the portable zip archive from Releases (such as whalegirl-petpet-win-x64.zip), extract it, then double-click 启动.cmd to start it.

WorkBuddy version

Download whalegirl-workbuddy-win-x64.zip, first run 启动.cmd to start the main desk pet process, then run 装WorkBuddy钩子.cmd, and finally fully exit and restart WorkBuddy.

Typical Usage

  • Working state: When you send a message or the model starts processing a task, she holds a bowl and eats.
  • Turn end: After a task turn is completed, she puts the bowl away and may enter a chin-on-hand, hands-together, or idle state.
  • Emergency interruption: If you press Esc in the middle of a task, she stops her current action and shows you a “dismissive expression.”
  • Click interaction: Click her directly on the desktop to trigger a wave or heart-hand action.
  • Special event: When a Subagent intervenes, small dolphins swim near her feet.

Notes

  1. Windows security prompt: When double-clicking an extracted .cmd file, Windows may display the prompt “We’ve protected your PC.” This is because the zip downloaded from the browser is marked as “from Internet.” Click “More info” and then choose “Run anyway” to resolve it. The file itself is not damaged.
  2. Package size: The portable version includes a complete Electron runtime, so the package is relatively large (about 200MB).
  3. Platform terms: All assets are AI-generated. Before use, confirm the relevant platform service terms.
  4. Dependencies and versions:
    - The dsh version depends on dsh >=0.1.5-rc.1 or @linxin666/dsh-pet.
    - The renderer version must match the version of the target dsh profile; otherwise, it may cause display anomalies or installation failures.
  5. MIT code: The code is open-sourced under the MIT license.

Summary

The Whale Girl Desk Pet uses AI-generated assets and procedurally baked idle animations to provide interactive desktop feedback for DSH and Claude Code users. Installation is relatively simple, but attention should be paid to Windows security prompts and renderer version compatibility across different platforms.
