Introduction

DeepSeek Harness (DSH) follows the “everything is a plugin” philosophy and allows developers to build agents by composing plugins. When building agents with long-term memory and structured thinking capabilities, complex external design patterns are often required. The dsh-cipher plugin is designed for this purpose. It directly packages the core architecture of cipher—continuous thinking, the three middle platforms (Execution/Insight/Memory), and the four memory categories—into native DSH components that can run without additional Rust processes or binaries.

What Is It

dsh-cipher is a DSH plugin maintained by NoxTyrannus, intended to integrate cipher’s design concepts (continuous thinking, three middle platforms, and four memory categories) into DeepSeek Harness as UNNI/LOOP session modes. It modifies DSH’s preset system so that users can use these modes directly in the native DSH interface without manually configuring complex underlying logic.

Core Features

  • Native UNNI and LOOP presets: After installation, the plugin generates two presets, UNNI and LOOP, in the DSH preset selector. These presets are created by copying the user-deployed standard preset and appending cipher lines; they are generated automatically when activated and require no restart.
  • Four-category memory deposition: After each dialogue turn in an UNNI or LOOP session, the plugin uses four independent memory agents to process evidence in parallel and deposit it into Attention, Experience, Preference, and Cognitive memory categories.
  • Deterministic cross-session retrieval: Supports cross-session retrieval with quota limits and a 14-day temporal decay mechanism. Retrieved memories are injected into the system prompt and are re-recorded only when the snapshot changes.
  • Insight review (three-question self-check): During deposition, the plugin performs a three-question self-check. The review results are deposited into memory as [INSIGHT] experience-type items, but the raw review process is not shown to the user.
  • Session mode switching and tools: Supports switching between Cipher·UNNI and Cipher·LOOP modes in the session header. Provides two tool interfaces, cipher_memory_search and cipher_memory_ingest, along with a sidebar AgentPool panel for monitoring sub-agent status.

Installation and Enablement

Ensure that DeepSeek Harness is installed and that you have write permission to the corresponding user preset directory. Run the following command in a terminal to install the plugin:

dsh plugin --profile <name> add dsh-cipher

After installation is complete, a new Cipher configuration block appears in DSH settings, and a collapsible Cipher Pool panel appears on the right side.

Typical Usage

  1. Configure the model: Configure the model in Settings → Models; the plugin will reuse DSH’s default model routing.
  2. Select a preset: In the dialogue preset selector, choose UNNI or LOOP to start a conversation.
  3. Test memory: In a later conversation, ask “What do you remember about me?”; deposited memories will be retrieved and injected into the context.
  4. Automatic continuation in LOOP: In a LOOP session, the agent automatically continues the conversation after every deposition round, based on interval limits and run caps, until it converges or is stopped by the user.

Architecture and Dependencies

The plugin uses a dual-plane architecture:
* Host Plane: Provides core services (ctx.cipher) responsible for memory storage, retrieval, quota management, and session mode control. It also provides the client settings page and sidebar panel.
* Preset Plane: Mounts lines for memory deposition, insight review, prompt injection, mode pinning, and tool definitions in the UNNI and LOOP presets.

Runtime requirements:
* Node.js version 22.19 or higher.
* DSH must include the agent-presets list, and the user preset root directory must be writable (the default path is usually ~/.dsh/.agent-presets/). Without a standard preset as the source, the plugin cannot generate UNNI/LOOP presets.
* All memory operations are invoked through DSH’s default model routing.

Data and Privacy

  • Storage: Memories are stored by default in the deployed storages directory (the cipher_memory domain). If storage is not mounted, memories only run in process memory and are lost after restart.
  • Privacy: All memories are local data and are not uploaded to the cloud. The plugin runs with DSH process permissions; review the source code and license before use.

Summary

dsh-cipher provides DSH with a complete structured memory and continuous thinking solution. Through native presets and memory agents, it lowers the barrier to implementing complex agent architectures in DSH, making it suitable for developers who need to maintain long-term context and structured thinking capabilities during conversations.
