Introduction¶
The core design philosophy of DeepSeek Harness (DSH) is “everything is a plugin.” For Web GUI users, maintaining an immersive coding environment is often more valuable than a static background. This plugin addresses that need by rendering Wallpaper Engine scene files in real time in the browser, allowing dynamic wallpapers (particles, water waves, drifting clouds, etc.) to become the background of DeepSeek Harness without running the full Wallpaper Engine application in the background.
What This Is¶
This is a plugin designed for the DSH Web GUI, maintained by the user yu502950715yang, and released under the MIT License.
It migrates Wallpaper Engine scene wallpapers into the browser environment and performs real-time computation using WebGL. The plugin does not rely on the Wallpaper Engine runtime and does not redistribute any third-party assets; instead, it reads the wallpaper files and engine resources installed locally on the user’s machine.
Core Capabilities¶
This plugin provides the following capabilities:
- Real-Time Scene Rendering: Computes the wallpaper background and particle systems in real time in the browser, reproducing the scale, transparency, and brightness set by the original author.
- Complete Particle Effects: Supports particle effects such as snow, rain, petals, sparks, fog, and bubbles, including gravity, wind direction, turbulence, lifetime, and color gradients.
- Texture Decompression Support: Supports mainstream compression formats (DXT1/3/5, RGBA, R8, RG88) and decompression of multi-frame sprite animations (torches, fog, halos) without blurred images or black borders.
- Multi-Format Support: Supports looping videos, web wallpapers (loaded in a sandbox), and image wallpapers (preview image + slow zoom animation).
- Dynamic Effects: Common effects animate, including water waves, ripples, drifting clouds, swaying plants, and pulses.
- Text Object Display: Time/date text objects in wallpapers are displayed in real time (such as VHS time and date).
- Performance Optimization: Supports one-click wallpaper pause and automatic background rendering pause; quality scale can be lowered to 0.5× to save VRAM.
- Fault Tolerance: If a wallpaper fails to render, it automatically falls back to the preview image to ensure the interface remains usable.
- Auto Detection: Automatically detects the Steam wallpaper directory (via registry entries, Steam library configuration, and common paths).
Installation and Enablement¶
Choose the appropriate installation method based on your environment.
CLI Installation (Recommended)¶
Run the following command in your terminal to add the plugin:
dsh plugin --profile web add github:yu502950715yang/dsh-use-wallpaper
After installation, refresh the Web GUI to apply the changes.
Desktop App Installation¶
The Desktop App cannot use the CLI command above (desktop profile is exclusively managed by the App).
- Open the Desktop App and click the Plugins page in the sidebar.
- Click Add Plugin.
- Enter the following in the package name field:
- GitHub method:
github:yu502950715yang/dsh-use-wallpaper - npm method:
@dsh-use/wallpaper-engine - Local development method: enter the absolute path to the local repository (e.g.,
E:/code/dsh-use-wallpaper).
- GitHub method:
- Click Install and refresh the page.
Local Development¶
If you modify the code locally and need changes to take effect immediately, you can use linked installation:
dsh plugin --profile web add link:E:/code/dsh-use-wallpaper
Configuration and Usage¶
After installation, you need to configure the paths in settings and select a wallpaper.
- Start
dsh weband open the GUI. - Go to Settings and find Wallpaper in the sidebar.
- Fill in the Wallpaper Directory (Steam Workshop content path) and Engine Directory (Wallpaper Engine installation directory), or click Auto Detect.
- Typical path examples:
- Wallpaper Directory:
D:/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/431960 - Engine Directory:
D:/Steam/steamapps/common/wallpaper_engine
- Wallpaper Directory:
- Typical path examples:
- Select a wallpaper from the thumbnail grid to apply it.
Common Features:
* Quality Scale: Adjust qualityScale (0.5–1) in settings; lower values consume less VRAM.
* Pause Control: Use the panel toggle to pause wallpaper rendering, or enable automatic pause when the window is backgrounded.
Notes¶
- Desktop Limitations: The Desktop App does not allow the use of the
dsh pluginCLI command; plugin management must be completed within the App interface. - Compatibility: Legacy DSH versions (≤0.1.6) include a compatibility layer; newer versions (0.1.7-alpha.1 onward) have been adapted to the new settings system.
- Visual Anomalies: Some wallpapers (especially those with complex masks or special blending modes) may display black blocks; effects such as blur and light shafts may be invisible on certain objects.
- Sandbox Execution: Text scripts run in a sandbox environment and do not affect the main process.
- Build Artifacts: The release package contains only
lib, dist, andcordis.patch.yml; no local build is required after installation.
Conclusion¶
This plugin reproduces Wallpaper Engine scene wallpapers in real time using native browser capabilities, providing developers with a dynamic coding background. For more details, the directory index, and source code, please visit its GitHub repository or the Skill Community directory.
