In the development and use of DSH (DeepSeek Harness), the rendering efficiency of conversation flows directly affects the debugging and interaction experience. When intermediate processes such as chains of thought and tool calls are mixed into the main body, the conversation flow becomes lengthy and difficult to read. The dsh-conversation-folding plugin aims to solve this issue by optimizing the UI presentation through a folding mechanism, without changing the underlying content logic.
This is a pure UI enhancement plugin maintained by TheHeartFickle. It collapses intermediate steps such as thinking processes and tool calls, while keeping user inputs and LLM outputs in their native rendering styles, without modifying the content itself.
Core features¶
-
Whole-turn folding (default)
User input keeps its native style. Thinking/tool-call processes are collapsed into an independent collapsible bar. Before the main body has been generated, the latest process preview is retained below the collapsible bar; after the main body starts generating, the process is automatically hidden and only the main body is shown. Click “Expand process” to view the complete process. -
Tool call group folding
Consecutivetool-callsteps are folded into groups and, by default, only the latest one is shown, reducing repetitive tool-call spam in the conversation flow. -
Chain-of-thought enhancement
Thinkblocks are expanded by default into a scrollable subframe. During generation, they automatically follow the bottom for real-time reading. When a new one appears, only the immediately preceding one is collapsed to maintain contextual continuity. -
Foldable step types are configurable by type
Settings → “Conversation folding” standalone tab: 18 step types can be individually toggled for folding (bash / think / read / write / edit / glob / grep / web / skill / subagent / background task / goal / task list / question / ralph / workflow / context injection / system prompt). Not folded by default: context injection, skill, system prompt; all other types are folded.
Installation and enabling¶
Prerequisites: DSH is installed and dsh web can run normally. Environment requirements: Node.js ≥ 20, DSH ≥ 0.1.2-rc.1.
Install using the DSH CLI:
dsh plugin --profile web add @the-heart-fickle/dsh-conversation-folding@latest
After installation, restart DSH and refresh the browser page.
Typical usage¶
- Send a message.
- Observe: thinking/tool-call processes are collapsed into an independent collapsible bar; after the main body starts outputting, the process is automatically hidden.
- Click “Expand process” to view the complete process.
- To return to official rendering, switch “Conversation display” to Normal / Compact in Settings.
Configuration¶
All configuration is completed in the browser-side “Settings” panel, persisted via the host settings system to ~/.dsh/settings.yaml (under the dsh-conversation-folding: namespace), and restored across clients/reloads.
- Conversation display (Settings → Conversation display):
Normal/Compact/Fold. Only “Fold” is handled by this plugin for process folding; there is only one folding behavior: whole-turn folding, and the main body is never folded. - Conversation folding (standalone tab): “fold” toggles for each step type. Tool calls are exactly matched through a mapping table using their literal registered names in the host tool registry (e.g.,
pwsh→Shell command,str_replace_editor→file editing,todo_write→task list,ask_user_question→question); tool types not listed in the mapping table are always folded. Not folded by default: context injection, skill, system prompt. Browser localStorage does not store any configuration.
Note: In 0.1.x, the profile cordis.patch.yml could deliver foldMode / auxVisible; starting from this version, all configuration has been moved to the browser settings, and the host no longer retains configuration.
Use cases and caveats¶
Suitable for developers and users who frequently need to inspect tool-call details but do not want to be flooded with large amounts of intermediate processes.
Note: The plugin runs with the permissions of the current DSH process. Before installing, please review its source code and license (MIT).
