Introduction¶
DeepSeek Harness (DSH) is built on the philosophy that “everything is a plugin.” When building research agents that need to perform web searches, read web pages or PDFs, and generate cited reports, manually orchestrating these steps is cumbersome and error-prone. The dsh-open-deep-research plugin provides an off-the-shelf deep research framework. It is built on DSH and handles planning, executing research, and synthesizing conclusions.
What Is It¶
dsh-open-deep-research is a configurable Deep Research agent and TypeScript framework. This plugin is maintained by songyang0603 and aims to solve the need to start from a single question and generate a Markdown report with citation links. It exposes standardized research services through the CLI, DSH Tool, and TypeScript API.
Core Features¶
- Planning and Execution: Plans 1 to 3 focused research units, runs them through DSH sub-agents, and finally generates a report using a synthesis agent.
- Multimodal Retrieval: Supports web search (in a dedicated Profile) and reading selected pages or PDFs via the
research-jinaProfile. - Structured Output: Returns a Markdown report with citations, normalized links, terminal status, and run metadata.
- Multiple Integration Methods: Provides CLI, DSH Tool, and TypeScript entry points, with a replaceable
ResearchEngineunderneath.
Installation and Setup¶
Environment requirements:
* Node.js ^22.19.0 or >=24.0.0
* pnpm 10.x
* DeepSeek Harness 0.1.0-rc.8
- Download the prerelease package:
curl -fL -O \
https://github.com/songyang0603/dsh-open-deep-research/releases/download/v0.1.0-alpha.5/dsh-open-deep-research-0.1.0-alpha.5.tgz
- Install the plugin (using the
research-jinaProfile as an example):
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh@0.1.0-rc.8 plugin --profile research-jina add ./dsh-open-deep-research-0.1.0-alpha.5.tgz
Typical Usage¶
Full Research (Search + Reading)¶
Use the research-jina Profile, which requires a DeepSeek Key and a Jina Key. This Profile provides web search and page reading capabilities. It sends selected public URLs to Jina.
export DEEPSEEK_API_KEY='<your-deepseek-key>'
export JINA_API_KEY='<your-jina-key>'
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh@0.1.0-rc.8 --profile research-jina \
--breadth balanced \
--language English \
"Research the main changes in DeepSeek Harness rc.8. Search for relevant material, read important source pages, and produce a report with citation links."
Search Only¶
If you do not have a Jina Key or cannot access Jina over the network, use the standalone research Profile. It provides planning, web search, multiple research units, synthesis, and report generation, but does not provide reliable full-page or PDF reading capabilities.
export DEEPSEEK_API_KEY='<your-deepseek-key>'
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh@0.1.0-rc.8 --profile research \
--language English \
"Research the main changes in DeepSeek Harness rc.8 and produce a report."
Use Cases and Notes¶
This plugin is suitable for scenarios where you need to quickly build complex research workflows in DeepSeek Harness.
- Note 1: The project status is
0.1.0-alpha.5Alpha Public Preview. Direct use in production is not recommended. - Note 2: The Reader returns at most 8,000 tokens per request, and long documents may be truncated.
- Note 3: The first clean
npxcall may take a few minutes to download and build dependencies, so please be patient. - Note 4: The
research-jinaProfile sends selected public URLs to Jina. Please use non-sensitive, publicly available URLs. - Note 5: DSH invokes pnpm when managing Profile plugins. Ensure pnpm is installed.
- Note 6: The two Profiles (
researchandresearch-jina) are independent and will not overwrite each other.
Conclusion¶
dsh-open-deep-research provides DeepSeek Harness users with an out-of-the-box deep research solution. It simplifies the full process from question definition to report generation through standardized interfaces and Profile management.
